| Hippotherapy | Therapeutic Riding |
| -Completed by professional therapist (PT, OT, SLP) in conjunction with a horse handler -Direct hands on participation by therapist at all times. -The horse's movement is essential to assist in meeting therapy goals. -In hippotherapy the treating therapist continually assesses and modifies therapy based on the client's responses. -The goal of hippotherapy is to improve neurological functioning in body movement, cognition, organization, and arousal levels. |
-Completed by professional horseback riding instructor in conjunction with volunteers -Occasional hands on assist by riding instructor and/or volunteer with instructor teaching from center of arena. -The horse's temperament is essential to learn riding skills. -In therapeutic riding the child is often taught riding lessons in group format. The instructor responds to the group as well as fostering individual successes. -Therapeutic riding aims to provide social, educational, and sport opportunities in recreational horseback riding lessons to individuals with disabilities. |
